Walter A. Pinion
Achievement has always been important to Walter Pinion, who has been an
athlete since he was old enough to compete . . . as an individual or as
part of a team. Photography has also been a mainstay in his life, from
the time he picked up a camera to begin documenting visits to
prospective colleges. Believing that he had an “eye” for photography, he
took photography electives along with his management courses at the
Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. His artistry was
rewarded with two fine-art exhibitions at Penn.
After retiring from a successful management and engineering career with
IBM, Walter decided to pursue his passion for photography by founding
Pinion Photography. The result is a uniquely positioned business that
exploits his ability to creatively document social, corporate and
athletic events.
As both an athlete and coach, Pinion’s credentials are impressive.
During college, he earned a position on Penn’s freshman basketball
team as a walk-on. He also achieved All-League status as a safety on the
University’s lightweight football team.
Not content to sit on the sidelines after college, he became a Certified
ski instructor and took up distance running, eventually completing 15
marathons. His love of track and fields led him into coaching, where he
has personally trained over 100 individuals for marathons and worked
with youth track-and-field All-Americans. He continues to be active as a
Certified track-and-field coach and as official announcer of U.S. Track
and Field at the national level.
The advent of the digital camera was the impetus for Walter’s decision
to branch into photography. “It’s the perfect vehicle for capturing the
immediacy, action, and drama of athletes and sporting competition,” he
says. The scope of his business also includes event coverage,
portraiture, and candid photography that he calls “Personal Essays.”
